• Sandra Day O'Connor becomes the first
  female U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
• MTV goes on the air.
• NASA launches the first U.S. space shuttle, Columbia.
• The FDA approves the use of the artificial sweetener aspartame.
• AIDS is first identified.
• IBM introduces its first personal computer.
• Pac-Man mania sweeps the country.
